Decorating a room with framed antique prints is popular for many DIY interior decorators. Hanging antique bird and fish prints is a popular way to create a “lodge” feel in a vacation home. Framing and hanging antique botanical prints, such as ferns and roses, can be an easy way to embellish a soothing and calming "nature" feel in a room. Although millions frame and mount their own antique prints for decoration, all are faced with the inescapable decision of choosing to decorate with antique originals, or opting to use reproduction antique prints. Although the dilemma is rarely debated by designers and decorators, the decision made has significant implications. Though some state that original antique prints possess a quality that simply can't be duplicated, many aren't able to differentiate an antique original from a corresponding reproduced print. The discrepancy in opinion is usually the result of the condition of the individual original. When reproducing antique prints digital image editing software can be utilized to restore detail and quality. However, things such as the vintage look of worn and aged paper, can't be reproduced in entirety. Until the early 90's there was little question as to whether an antique original looked more appealing than a corresponding reproduced print. Unless an antique print press (forging a plate and inking it by hand) was the means of printing the reproduced print, most visual details were virtually impossible to recreate. It wasn’t until the current age of computer-based technology that antique prints were able to be scanned (either by digital scanner or camera), digitally restored, and reprinted with such astounding detail and quality that the reproductions rival the corresponding originals. While the debate can be exhausting, there is little debate on the cost factor. Antique original prints, with very few exceptions, are substantially more expensive. is the price really justified? In reality, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For many hobbyist home decorators and do it yourself interior designers, the answer is no (especially considering that many will hang themed groupings in several rooms of their homes). Nevertheless, to many collectors of fine antique originals, the vintage originality of an art print that dates back several hundred years is very appealing, and the cost is justified. Also, there is something to be said about the investment value of select rare prints. Like many collectables, the values of antique originals can increase in the long run. This is worth considering for those who seek value and collectability just as much or more than they do decoration. Still, for many decorators it is more cost efficient to hunt for quality reproductions. Price isn't the only benefit to decorating with reproduction antique prints. They also provide customized options that assist in fitting a unique piece of art into an already well-decorated room. Some print reproduction companies will offer prints in an assortment of size and framing options. Finding a “must –have” print available in 8x10 to fit in a wall display grouping, when the original from which it came was a 5x7, is a luxury made possible only through reproduction. If trying to stay on a tight budget, search for publishing companies that print in Standard Sizes: (5x7 - 8x10 - 11x14). Because these sizes are often used, one can easily search for affordable frames and mats. While only a few publishers offer these options, investigating those who do may be an important element to adding desired effect without compromising the established layout.
