New Art History School opens in Florence with classes held in English

A gap year can be exciting and fulfilling...not sure what to do on your year out? Why not spend it in Florence? Home to some of the world’s most celebrated art and architecture, and the seat of the Renaissance, Florence is one of the most exciting, fun and beautiful cities to spend all or part of your gap year. After school and exams, it provides an opportunity to indulge in the culture of Italy – to learn more about the design, the food, the wine, and the dolce vita, as well as experiencing the freedom and the enjoyment of daily Italian life. Here at the Florence Institute we are located right in the heart of the city, which is ideal for taking full advantage of all Florence’s treasures on your gap year. From September 2008, the Florence Institute will offer a range of classes for you to choose from.

In a relaxed and elegant environment, surrounded by cafes and restaurants, the Florence Institute offers the opportunity to study History of Art from the Renaissance period, right where it started. Rather than being totally classroom centered, there are plenty of field trips to take you out and about to discover the influences that inspired some of the most famous works of art in the world. And to balance the old with the new, we also offer the unique chance to learn about the history of Modern Italian Art, encompassing the development of modern art from the end of the 19th century to the modern day in Italy. All the History of Art classes and trips are held in the English language, and all our teachers are experts in their fields, whose enthusiasm for art and for Florence will bring the history alive. In addition, from January 2009, there will be further developments to the art history programs.

Part of living in another country is getting to grips with a different culture, and the excitement and the challenges that this brings with it. A development of the knowledge of the language can help you to enjoy the culture and customs of Florence even more, and that’s why we also offer language classes alongside the History of Art courses. The classes focus on spoken conversational Italian, with themes relating to common life, travel and business travel situations including greetings, days of the week, asking for directions, food, making plans, telling time, purchases and dealing with money and numbers…everything that you need to enhance your stay in Italy, and incredibly useful if you want to travel around Italy after the course.

Florence is the perfect city to stay in on your gap year…small enough to walk to most places, but large and vibrant enough so that there is always an abundance of things going on – festivals, fairs, shows, concert as well as numerous restaurants, bars and clubs. It is also a great place from which to travel and take a holiday in other parts of Tuscany including Siena and Pisa, as well as further afield to Rome, Venice, Milan and to the south and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

The Florence Institute also offers undergraduate and graduate courses in Interior and Graphic Design, as well as pre Architecture courses. Please see our website, www.florence-institute.com for more information. So come and study with us here in Florence and discover a whole new way of life!
